What To Eat On A Nausea Day On A GLP-1
Nausea is the most common reason people stop this medication. What you eat, and when, changes it more than most people expect.
The most important nutritional job on this medication is also the hardest one, because it asks you to eat when you have no interest in eating.
Almost everyone on a GLP-1 is told to eat more protein. Very few are told how, which is the part that matters, because the medication works by making you not want to eat.
This is the single highest-leverage nutritional habit on this treatment. Protein is what determines how much of the weight you lose is fat rather than muscle — and muscle is what determines the metabolic rate you have to live with afterwards.
Around 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, spread across three or four meals. For a 75kg woman that is roughly 120 to 165 grams daily, or about 30 to 40 grams per meal.
Note the direction of travel: requirements go up in a deficit, not down. You are eating less food overall and need more of one thing within it, which is why this has to be deliberate. Our guide to protein per meal covers the underlying research.
Physically put the protein in your mouth before anything else on the plate. Not as a diet rule — as a sequencing tactic.
On a GLP-1 you will often become full unexpectedly and much earlier than expected. If fullness arrives when you have eaten the salad and the potatoes, the protein is the thing that gets left. Eat it first and the rest is optional.
“Fullness arrives without warning. If it arrives after the salad, the protein is what you lose.”Elena Marchetti, RD, PhD
Liquid protein empties from the stomach faster than solid food and is far better tolerated when you feel full or mildly nauseated. It is not a compromise — the amino acids are identical.
A whey or soy isolate shake delivers 25 to 30 grams in a glass. Greek yoghurt blended with milk and berries gets close. Bone broth, milk-based coffee, and a well-made lentil soup all contribute more than people assume. On genuinely bad days, two shakes and one small meal is a perfectly reasonable day.
Three large meals is the wrong shape for a stomach that empties slowly. Four to five smaller occasions of 20 to 30 grams each is easier to achieve and, as it happens, better for stimulating muscle protein synthesis anyway.
This is one of the rare cases where the easier option is also the more effective one.
By protein per unit of volume — which is the metric that matters when volume is your constraint:
Whey or soy isolate (25–30g per scoop). Skyr or Greek yoghurt (18–20g per 170g pot). Cottage cheese (14g per 100g). Chicken breast (31g per 100g). Tinned tuna (25g per tin). Eggs (6g each). Tofu, firm (17g per 100g). Edamame (11g per 100g). Prawns (24g per 100g).
If you are plant-based, add 20 to 30 percent to your target — plant proteins are less digestible and lower in leucine.
Almost everyone overestimates their protein intake, often by half. Two weeks of honest tracking recalibrates your sense of what 30 grams looks like, and after that most people can eyeball it.
A general calorie tracker will do this, but it is optimised for the opposite problem — helping someone with a normal appetite eat less. A GLP-1 companion app such as Zenday App is built around the situation you are actually in: protein as the primary target rather than calories, and food logged against dose day so you can see which days you routinely fall short. Usually it is the two days after the injection, and knowing that is what lets you plan a shake into them rather than discovering the gap at 9pm.
A day or two of very low intake happens and is not a crisis. A pattern of it is.
If you are consistently unable to eat, losing weight faster than roughly one percent of body weight a week, or losing strength, contact your prescriber. Escalating more slowly, or holding at a lower dose, is a legitimate and common adjustment.
Roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight per day — about 30 to 40 grams per meal for most women. Requirements rise during a calorie deficit rather than falling.
Use liquid protein. Shakes, Greek yoghurt, milk-based drinks and soups are far easier to tolerate when appetite is low, and are absorbed the same as solid food. Eat protein first at every meal so it is not what gets left.
Yes — they are one of the most practical tools available, because they deliver 25 to 30 grams in a small, easily tolerated volume. Protein powder is food, not a supplement.
A greater share of the weight you lose comes from muscle rather than fat. That lowers resting metabolic rate, reduces strength, and makes maintaining the loss harder afterwards.

Up to 40 percent of the weight lost on these medications can be lean mass. Two interventions change that substantially.
The daily total gets all the attention. The distribution across the day is what determines whether you use it.
